New Litter Baskets Combine Style and Function For years, Old Louisville residents have complained about those ugly wire baskets or old plastic trash cans scattered throughout the neighborhood. Now a solution is at hand. The Old Louisville Neighborhood Council has unanimously approved a litter basket design that is more appropriate for our historic district. A prototype of the design is on display in the Old Louisville Information Center. The basic structure of the unit is based upon the Downtown Louisville cans which have been installed in the Central Business District for the past two years. That successfully functioning design has been retrofitted to blend in with the Victorian character of Old Louisville and has also been approved by Landmarks. OLNC Vice Chair Ken Herndon, who helped develop the downtown model in his role as Executive Director of the Louisville Downtown Management District, was asked to do the same for Old Louisville. The containers will be locally made and designed specifically for Old Louisville. Although not inexpensive at $585 each, they are at or below the price for off-the-shelf models. Already, more than $18,000 has been committed for the project including $8,000 from the Toonerville Neighborhood Association, which will be the first to install the containers, and $10,000 from the 2nd Street Neighborhood Association. Additionally, Old Louisville neighbor and business owner, David Norton, has offered to purchase cans for his two businesses, the Magnolia Bar and Grille and Woody’s Tavern. Ultimately, at least 100 cans will be needed. Other associations and business owners will be solicited to join in the effort to continue to improve and enhance the neighborhood with this project. 			Kentucky Shakespeare Festival Presents Macbeth and Comedy of Errors in its 45th season in Central Park Celebrating 45 years of Free Will in Central Park, The Kentucky Shakespeare Festival professional company will present the Tragedie of Macbeth this summer. A trio of witches prophesize that Macbeth “shalt be king hereafter!” To fulfill this destiny, Lady Macbeth persuades her husband to kill King Duncan so he can become king of Scotland. In his quest for power, Macbeth is willing to destroy anything in his path as he weaves a web that he may not escape. Macbeth performances will be nightly at 8pm on the following dates: June 23-26, June 28-July 3, and July 5-July 10. A preview performance will be June 22nd. The Globe Players is an advanced youth theatre company for high school students and Camp Shakespeare alumni ages 13 and up. Each summer, The Globe Players produce a full-length Shakespearean play and perform three evenings during Kentucky Shakespeare Festival’s Free Will in Central Park. This summer’s play will be The Comedy of Errors. After a shipwreck has split up Aegeon, Antiopholus and Dromio from his wife Antipholus and Dromio, they all end up in Ephesus eighteen years later where mistaken identities lead to a comedic sequence of errors. Performances of The Comedy of Errors will be on July 12, 13 and 14 at 8pm on the main stage. Kentucky Shakespeare Festival will offer Shadow Sign interpreted performances for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. The Festival is able to sponsor these performances after receiving a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Shadow Sign performances will be as follows: Comedy of Errors - July 12 – 14, Macbeth - July 15 – 17. Kentucky Shakspeare Festival will also offer Audio Described performances and Theatre Caption for the visually and hearing impaired community. Services will be provided by The Kentucky Center. Audio Description and Caption Theatre will be as follows: Macbeth-June 26 and July 9, Comedy of Errors-July 14 Free Will in Central Park will be held at the Douglas C. Ramey Amphitheatre. Admissions to all shows is free.

Neighborhood Farmers’ Markets Open

The Old Louisville Farm- Works Market and the Smoketown/Shelby Park Farmers Market open for the season in early June.
The Old Louisville FarmWorks Market will be open each Wednesday, 3pm-6pm, from June 1, 2005, to October 12, 2005, at the Walnut Street Baptist Church parking lot, Third and Saint Catherine Streets.
The Smoketown/Shelby Park Farmers Market will be open each Saturday, 8am-noon, from June 4, 2005, to October 29, 2005, at Meyzeek Middle School parking lot at the corner of Preston and Breckinridge Streets.
Both markets will feature the best of the season in fruits, vegetables, flowers, and freshly prepared foods.

 

Spring Book Sale at the Library

Friends of the Library will be holding its annual Spring Book Sale June 10-12, 2005, at the First Unitarian Church, Fourth and York Streets.
The sale features the season’s best prices on used fiction, non-fiction, art books, and children’s literature.

Dear Editor:
I am a recent and very happy addition to the Old Louisville neighborhood. I am amazed at the wealth of lovely architecture, colorful history and community involvement one finds here.
One thing I find as a terrible disappointment, however, is the obvious problem with litter in the neighborhood. I have talked to several individuals and it appears that this has been an ongoing problem in the area. Does anyone have any advice on possible solutions?
I know I and others have taken it upon ourselves to get out on our streets several times a week and pick up the litter, and I would urge others to do the same. The old adage, ”if you want something done right, you’ll have to do it yourself,” is very true!
In addition, I urge people to not sit idly by when litterbugs try to defile our beautiful streets. I have talked to the police about this problem, and they are in essence very ineffective in dealing with litter. In fact, they couldn’t even tell me the last time some one was actually cited or fined for littering in Old Louisville!
My most recent tactic in fighting litter is to confront every person I see throwing litter down on our streets. And let’s admit it, we all see it happen. I even went so far as to follow a young fellow the other day and return the McDonald’s bag full of garbage he threw out his window into our alley. He didn’t like it, of course, but I think he at least got the message. What people like that need is to have a little shame and learn some respect. Their parents obviously did not teach them anything, so I will be more than happy to point this out to any litterbugs I see in the future!

Art Show Poster Competition Begins

The 49th annual St. James Court Art Show announces a poster competition for the 2005 show, scheduled September 30, October 1, and 2, in historic Old Louisville. The competition winner will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize, plus 25% of the income from show poster sales.
Entries must be original designs and include the name “Saint James Court Art Show”, the year “2005” and “49th Annual”. Limited and open edition publications (250 pieces each) of the poster design will be produced by the St. James Court Art Show, which will own the design and related artwork. The winning image will also be sold in shirt form at the show.
The fee to enter the competition is $20.00. The deadline for entry is 5:00pm, July 16, 2005.
An information/entry form including specifics of the competition is available in WORD .doc format, as is a jpeg file of the 2004 winning poster image. Either of these can be e-mailed to you at your request.

12th Annual Garden Tour Set to Blossom

The 2005 Old Louisville Hidden Treasures Garden Tour celebrates its history with a Back to Our Roots theme on Saturday, July 9, 2005 and Sunday, July 10, 2005, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Over 1,000 gardening enthusiasts from near and far are expected to descend upon the Old Louisville Historic Preservation District for the 12th anniversary of this ever-growing event.
This year’s garden tour will feature 10 to 12 beautiful private gardens along five blocks of the
Second Street corridor. At least eight new gardens will be included. In addition, a few will be favorites from previous garden tours. New this year will be a preview of a landscape rehab in progress of a privately owned, but open to the public, neighborhood park that offers a natural respite in a busy urban setting.
Included with the garden tour is the popular Art in the Garden event. This event is held on the grounds of the DuPont Mansion Bed and Breakfast at 1317 S. 4th Street. Artists will be painting and exhibiting their works in the mansion’s backyard during both days of the tour.
The garden tour is sponsored by the Second Street Neighborhood Association as a non-profit fund raising event to benefit the community. The garden tour was co-founded by SSNA members, Virginia Ehrlich and Peggy Mims. With their leadership, the support and backing of the SSNA membership, and the help of volunteers from many parts of Old Louisville and the metro community, the Annual Hidden Treasures Garden Tour was launched in 1994. The tour has since showcased nearly 100 gardens chosen for their excellence in landscape design and originality.
Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 day of the tour. Day-of-tour tickets and maps will be available at the sales table in front of the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, 1402 Saint James Court at Magnolia Avenue. Tickets are good for both days of the tour. No rain dates or refunds.
This is a walking tour and comfortable shoes and lightweight clothing are recommended. Complimentary refreshments will be available in Haskins Hall in the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum. Iced drinking water is available at each garden. Restroom facility locations will be provided with the map.

Call for Volunteers
at the St. James Court Art Show

The St. James Court Art Show Consortium is looking for volunteers for this year. It seems early to be thinking about the art show, especially with the lovely spring weather; however, the art show will be here before you know it. There are many opportunities to volunteer varying from a shift at one of the beer booths to helping plan the 50th Anniversary show in 2006.
Committees: Throughout the year (not just on art show weekend) there are many committees that are in need of volunteers. Please contact either your neighborhood association show coordinator or Margue Esrock at the Art Show office to volunteer. Committees vary with neighborhood associations and include Beer Booth, Food Booth, Set up/Take Down, Sponsors, Office, Booth Sitting, Section Captains.
50th Anniversary in 2006: The neighborhood consortium of associations that run the Art Show is forming a committee to work on the 50th Anniversary in 2006. If you are a marketing/pr/advertising professional your input would be invaluable for this big anniversary celebration.

Leander’s has new Outdoor Dining and Revised Menu

Al fresco dining is now available on the patio at Leander’s on Oak. Fountains, period lighting, wrought iron fencing, flowers, herbs and evergreens grace the newly-completed garden patio, which seats 90.
Executive Chef Charlie Owen has made numerous changes to dishes on the menu, as well as added several new selections. Flash-seared Ahi tuna or Black Angus Potstickers are new appetizers. New salads include organic mesculin served with country-ham wrapped melon and baby spinach with flank steak. Entree additions include cornbread-stuffed Tilapia; Maine Lobster or Three Cheese Ravioli; Spiney Lobster Tail; and a spicy, rich fish stew called Ciapino.
Leander’s has 68 wines (including four sparkling wines), plus a full liquor selection and a variety of beers.
Leander’s is located at the northwest corner of First and Oak Streets in historic Old Louisville. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday, 11am-10pm, and brunch on Sunday, 9am-3pm.

 Attendance Poor
at OLNC Board Meetings

Attendance at recent Old Louisville Neighborhood Council Board meetings has been poor.
All neighborhood associations chairs or their designees are official voting members of the board. Chairs are encouraged/urged to attend to have a voice in the decision-making body for the entire neighborhood.
All neighbors are invited to attend board meetings, which are held at 7pm on the fourth Tuesday
of each month at the Old Louisville Information Center.

Friends of Central Park Holds a Raffle

Friends of Central Park participated in the Garden Show at Running Water Farm, May 21 and 22, which benefitted the Louisville Deaf Oral School. Our booth had membership literature and a raffle for a romantic evening in Old Louisville including dinner for two at 610 Magnolia and a night at Dupont Mansion, a premier bed and breakfast on Fourth street. Our special thanks to Herb and Gayle Warren and Chef Edward Lee.
The lucky winner was Margaret Love Sooy, who is looking forward to the experience.
Many people volunteered at the booth. Special thanks also to Mark Eliason who provided the elegant gazebo, to Old Louisville Florist for a gorgeous bouquet, and to Deborah Stewart, event coordinator.

Friends of Central Park

The R&B group, Rufus, performed under the pergola in Central Park on May 8, 2005. About 30 people attended to hear the mellow sounds, enjoy the weather, and marvel at the growth of the wisteria.
Gail Wynters and Rob Nickerson will perform at the same place on Sunday, June 5, 2005, 4pm. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy.
